Summer Experimental Memoir with Ariel Gore

June 30 – July 28, 2024

Asynchronous Online Course Taught by Ariel Gore

Four amazing weeks to explore pastiche, hybrid, and speculative memoir. This workshop is adaptably designed for new and experienced writers wanting to push their own limits as well as the limits of the genre. We’ll try on unique forms and generate new material for short stories based on real life, personal essays, and book-length memoirs in process.

Please read at least one experimental memoir before class starts. Here are some good ones to choose from—certainly not an exhaustive list: A Constellation of Ghosts by Laraine Herring, Zami by Audrey Lorde, Borderlands/La Frontera by Gloria Anzaldua, Speak, Memory by Vladimir Nabokov, Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot, Monster Portraits by Sofia Samatar, Afterglow: A Dog Memoir by Eileen Myles, The Motion of Light in Water by Samuel Delany, 100 Demonsby Lynda Barry, In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado, Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel, Mean by Myriam Gurba, Bruja by Wendy Ortiz, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris, Dictee by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, True Love and Other Stories of Miraculous Escape by Micah Perks, The Periodic Table by Primo Levi, The Vicious Red Relic, Love: A Fabulist Memoir by Anna Joy Springer, or We Were Witches by Ariel Gore, your instructor.

Please also listen to or read Meander, Spiral, Explode by Jane Alison if you have not already (print, digital, or audio are all fine.)

This is an asynchronous online writing workshop, meaning that you log on several times each week when you like. We do not meet on Zoom.

Enrollment is limited, so please sign up early.

Tuition is $300. Please Venmo @Ariel-Gore-1 (last 4 digits = 4999) or email arielfiona@gmail for other payment options.
