Taught by Maureen Burdock, PhD, author of the critically acclaimed graphic memoir Queen of Snails!

May 7-July 30: On Zoom Wednesdays 4-6 Pacific/7-9 Eatern & Online Asychronous

A 12-week journey to create powerful healthcare comics in an intimate, supportive community of visual storytellers

Graphic Medicine is at the confluence of healthcare and comics. If you’re a fan (or already a creator) of comics that address mental, physical, or public health topics, then you know how powerful this genre can be! In this intimate (limit of 16 students) 12-week deep-dive, participants will explore the processes of creating graphic medicine. I’ve designed this course to inspire you; to give you a solid sense of community and sharper knowledge of context for your Graphic Medicine project; to untangle any snags you might encounter regarding content, form, and technicalities; and to help empower you to get that short comic or longform work out into the world, where it can do some good!

BEGINNERS WELCOME.

You’ll . . .

Become more familiar with Graphic Medicine works and explore specific topics and approaches within the genre.

Engage in group discussions to address specific questions and interests, and to build community.

Create a 32-page comic over the course of our three months together OR work on something else you’ve already begun, or wish to begin, of a different length (only prerequisite is that the work pertains to the course topic of Graphic Medicine). We will have time to workshop these during the course.

Learn about the basics of self-publishing & approaching agents and publishers.
